LO: To explore air pollution.

What do you already know about air pollution?

LO: To explore air pollution.

At the end of the lesson you will understand what air pollution is, its main causes, and how it affects both the environment and human health.

Recap: Dangers of Deforestation

Deforestation leads to habitat loss, affects air quality, and contributes to climate change. Why do you think these dangers matter for our planet?

Burning Fossil Fuels: The Main Cause

Fossil fuels like coal and petrol release greenhouse gases when burned. These gases trap heat, leading to climate change.

These gases create air pollution.

What is Smog?

Smog is a type of air pollution caused by the mix of smoke and fog. It harms our lungs, makes breathing difficult, and can damage plants and buildings.

Collecting Our Pollution Catchers

How To Make Pollution Catcher At Home

Today, we are going to create our own pollution catchers and later this afternoon we’ll analyse the results.

What do you predict?
Do you think the air around us is clean and safe?
Or do you think we will find pollution particles on our catchers?

Write your prediction in your book!

I predict that our pollution catchers will show...

Observing and Recording Results

Back in class, carefully examine what has collected on your pollution catcher cards.
Look closely and draw what you notice, and write down your observations.
Then think:
Which location showed the highest amount of pollution?

Analysing Pollution Patterns

Compare how much pollution you found on cards in different places. Was there more pollution near busy roads than woodlands?

Analyse Pollution Catchers from different parts of Chantry, how is the data different?

Pollution Amounts

Challenge/Conclusion: Why Are Some Places More Polluted?

Discuss as a class: Which places had the most pollution and why? Think about traffic, factories, and natural spaces.

Conclusion – What does the data show?
By analysing my data, I found that Chantry/St Mark’s level of pollution is…

  • low / medium / high

  • because… (e.g., “there were only a few particles on the card”, “there were lots of dark spots”, “this location was closest to the road”, etc.)

Careers: Protecting our Air

Meet Jane Clarke, a Nature Reserve Manager at Thames Water, who works to reduce air pollution and protect wildlife.

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
