Active vs Passive
We often choose passive structures when
we want to talk about an action,
but are not so interested in
(saying) who or what does/did it.

Slide 17 - Slide

ACTIVE
An architect designed this beautiful building.

Austrians speak German.

He wrote this book in 2010.
PASSIVE
This beautiful building was designed by an architect.

German is spoken by Austrians.

This book was written in 2010 (by him).

Slide 18 - Slide

Same structure.
ACTIVE
An architect  / designed / this beautiful building.
subject     /      verb(s)   /  rest of the sentence

PASSIVE
This beautiful building / was designed / by an architect.
subject          /     verb(s)            /  rest of the sentence

Slide 19 - Slide

Same structure, but...
ACTIVE
An architect  / designed / this beautiful building.
subject    = "the doer"

PASSIVE
This beautiful building / was designed / by an architect.     subject= "the receiver" (or in bad English "the undergoer")

Slide 20 - Slide

Also / or
The passive is always a form of
TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE (=voltooid deelwoord)
Example:
The researcher analyses the survey results. (=ACTIVE)
The survey results are analysed (by the researcher). (=PASSIVE)

!!! analyses is present tense, so the form of TO BE is also present

Slide 21 - Slide

Also / or
The passive is always a form of
TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE (=voltooid deelwoord)
Example:
That man saw the robbery. (=ACTIVE)
The robbery was seen by that man. (=PASSIVE)

!!! saw is past tense, so the form of TO BE is also past.
