Cathy: Well, I haven’t made any plans yet. I’ll probably just have something simple like tomato soup.
Peter: Oh, sounds yummy.

Prediction
Will and be+going to are very common, and a lot of the time they are used in a similar way to talk about predictions. But not always.

It's his intention - or his plan - to cook curry. 

be + going to
is often used in this way. 

Je bent van plan (intentie) iets te doen. Je hebt het al gepland.

De beslissing om iets te doen wordt genomen terwijl je praat (spontaan). Het is niet gepland.

Present Continous
Cathy: Are you eating alone?
Peter: No I'm eating with a couple of friends.

The Present Continous is used to talk about an arrangement (afspraak)

Present Simple
Cathy: When are your friend coming to dinner?
Peter: Well my friends are passing through London on a very tight schedule. So, they arrive at the station at 5 pm, we eat dinner at 6 pm, and they leave on a plane at 9 pm the same night!
The Present Simple is used to talk about timetables; things that happen at specific times.
