Cathy: Peter, what’s for dinner tonight?

Peter:  I’m going to cook my favourite meal.

Cathy: I know what that is.

Peter:  That’s curry. I’ve got all the ingredients already. And you Cathy? What about you?

Cathy: Well, I haven’t made any plans yet. I’ll probably just have something simple like tomato soup.

Peter: Oh, sounds yummy.

Cathy: Yeah

In het gesprekje werden twee vormen van de 'future' (toekomst) gebruikt. Welke waren dat?

Prediction

Will and be+going to are very common, and a lot of the time they are used in a similar way to talk about predictions. But not always.

Peter is going to cook curry.

He already new his plan at the time of speaking.

It's his intention - or his plan - to cook curry. 

be + going to

is often used in this way. 

Je bent van plan (intentie) iets te doen. Je hebt het al gepland.

I'll probably have something simple like tomato soup. 

Cathy used I will because she made her decision at the time of speaking.

will

De beslissing om iets te doen wordt genomen terwijl je praat (spontaan). Het is niet gepland.

Present Continous

Cathy: Are you eating alone?

Peter: No I'm eating with a couple of friends.

The Present Continous is used to talk about an arrangement (afspraak)

Present Simple

Cathy: When are your friend coming to dinner?

Peter: Well my friends are passing through London on a very tight schedule. So, they arrive at the station at 5 pm, we eat dinner at 6 pm, and they leave on a plane at 9 pm the same night!

The Present Simple is used to talk about timetables; things that happen at specific times.

If you already have made plans to visit London, which sentence is better?

1. I will travel to London this year.
2. I'm going to travel to London this year.

Which sentence is correct?

1. The train will leave at 3 pm.
2. The train leaves at 3 pm.
