- Used to talk about general things (algemene dingen)

Used before vowel (klinker) sounds (a,e,i,o,u).

When do you not use 'the'

Sometimes, The is not used when you use a building or place  for a specific purpose.

- 'I am in prison'

- 'I am at the prison'
