Grammar: allowed to/be able to/ought to/should/had better/would rather

Grammar

• Be allowed= mag (he is allowed to go to the party).

• Be able= in staat zijn/iets kunnen (I'll be able to call you tonight).

• Should/ought to= (zou) eigenlijk moeten (they should do their homework more often/ they ought to do their homework more often). Ought to is iets formeler dan should.

• Had better (not)= (zou) eigenlijk (niet) moeten/kon maar beter (niet)   (I had better go now).

• Would rather= (zou) liever (niet) willen (She'd rather say nothing).

-Als je het hebt over hoe iemand eruitziet of hoe iemand doet: in vergelijkingen: 

the children were acting like monkeys.

-Bij het geven van voorbeelden, in plaats van such as: 

I love sports with a bat, like baseball.

-Met de werkwoorden look, taste, smell, sound, feel:

These sweets taste like strawberries.

-Als vervoegwoord ('zoals'). Na as volgt dan een zinsdeel met een werkwoord. (vaak past like hier ook):

-Als je het hebt over een baan van iemand of een functie van iets:

She works as an actor in London.
