Wat zijn 'adjectives' en 'adverbs'?

adjectives: bijvoeglijke naamwoorden

adverbs: bijwoorden

Basisregel: een bijvoeglijk naamwoord geeft extra informatie over een zelfstandig naamwoord (over 'wat' iets of iemand is), een bijwoord geeft extra informatie over een werkwoord, bijvoeglijk naamwoord, zin of ander bijwoord (over 'hoe' iets gebeurt). 

Het mooie meisje. (mooie is een bijv.nw. en zegt iets over het zelfst.nw. meisje)

Hij praat duidelijk. (duidelijk is een bijw. en zegt iets over het ww. praten)

Speling in het Engels:

Je maakt een bijwoord door -ly achter een bijvoeglijk naamwoord te zetten.

Máár er zijn heel veel uitzonderingen, spellingsveranderingen, etc. 

1. bijvoeglijk naamwoorden met een getal schrijf je met een streepje ertussen

          sixteen-year-old girl 

          3-hour drive

2. bijvoeglijk naamwoorden die al eindigen op -ly kunnen als bijwoord gebruikt worden door er een formulering met 'way' of 'manner' aan toe te voegen

          A friendly girl.  - That girl behaves in a friendly way. 

          A silly person.   - That person acts in a silly manner. 

3. het bijvoeglijk naamwoord difficult  kunnen niet als bijwoord worden gebruikt, je moet dit dus anders gebruiken

          He managed to do this with great difficulty.

Máár er zijn heel veel uitzonderingen, spellingsveranderingen, etc. 

4. de woorden daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, early, fair, high, low, far, fat, wrong en strange kunnen zowel als bijvoeglijk naamwoord als bijwoord worden gebruikt.

           This is his daily schedule.      - He goes to the gym daily. 

           It was a fair game.                   - He played fair. 

5. na de werkwoorden to taste, to look, to feel, to smell, to sound (zintuigelijke werkwoorden) en to be komt er nooit een bijwoord, maar altijd een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, tenzij het een actief werkwoord is.

           Those cookies smell great! 

           That girl is sweet. 

Maar:   He tasted the soup carefully

6. het bijwoord van good is well

           That is a good book.        - He sings really well. 

Adjectives and adverbs

Als laatste moet je opletten met woorden die van betekenis veranderen als je ze met -ly gebruikt. Deze woorden blijven dus gewoon hetzelfde als ze als bijwoord worden gebruikt.

- je zet óf -er of -est achter het woord 

          bij bijvoeglijk naamwoorden van één lettergreep

          bij bijvoeglijk naamwoorden eindigend op medeklinker + y 

          bij tweelettergrepige woorden die eindigen op -le, -er en -ow 

         

Comparisons

2 mogelijkheden:

- óf je zet more of most voor het bijvoeglijk naamwoord

          bij bijvoeglijk naamwoorden van drie lettergrepen

          bij bijwoorden eindigend op -ly

Er zijn ook nu flink wat uitzonderingen!
