What is the Past Simple
We use the Past Simple to talk about actions that both started and ended in the past. It is one of the most commonly used tenses in the English language and it indicates that something has already happened.

When do we use the Past Simple?
  1. To talk about events that happened in the past.                       
  •  I walked to school yesterday.
  • I watched a tv show last week.
2. To talk about moods/emotional states from the past.
  • I was a happy teenager.
  • I felt really upset when my best friend moved.
3. To talk about repeated actions in the past.                           
  • I visited my grandma every winter for ten years.
  • I studied every day last week.

How do we form the Past Simple?
For regular verbs:
Positive sentences: Subject + add -ed to the base form/infinitive verb.
Negative sentences Subject + Did not/didn't  +  base form/infinitive verb.
Questions: Did + subject + base form/infinitive verb.
Example: Walk
  • Positive: I walked to the store yesterday.
  • Negative: I did not walk to the store yesterday.
  • Question Did I walk to the store yesterday?

How do we form the Past Simple?
Verbs in the Past Simple do not change depending on the subject.
  • I walked
  • You walked
  • He/she walked
  • We walked
  • They walked

Spelling exceptions: verbs ending in -Y
If the -y is preceded by a vowel .(klinker) Example: 'Enjoy'
-> verb + ed (same rule as before)
  • I enjoyed our walk yesterday.
BUT
If the -y is preceded by a consonant. (medeklinker) Example: 'Hurry'
-> -y becomes i + add -ed
  • He hurried to catch the last train home.
