South Africa has 5 different climates:

- sea climate with dry winters
- sea climate with precipitation throughout the year (savannah)
- steppe climate 
- desert climate
- Mediterranean climate

South Africa is a rainbow nation:

- eleven official languages
- Dutch influences because of colonialism
(mixed-race people, Afrikaans)
- Asians, they worked on plantations

White people were afraid that the blacks would seize power --> 
laws to separate those groups, based on race

The black population had to live in homelands, that was an other area then townships
