What is the difference between a transit passenger and a transfer passenger?

Transfer:

• Connecting passenger
• sometimes a different airline
• different flight number
• Passenger could miss the flight
• Passenger must go to another gate 

Transit:

• Passenger continues to fly with the same aircraft
• Flight number remains the same
• Passenger cannot miss this flight

• Exceptions: passengers who travel between Schengen countries. These passengers may exit without a passport check. 

Schiphol

At Schiphol the B, C, D (bovenverdieping) and M pier are used only for the  Schengen flights. Passengers do not have to go through immigrations (passport check) when they depart/arrive at these piers.

Most flights within Europe depart and arrive at these piers.

Schengen treaty (verdrag):

• 1985
• 26 countries
• treaty was signed in the village of Schengen (Luxemburg) 
• free traffic of persons and goods
• people may travel between these countries without showing their passports.
