  • explain the Schengen treaty (verdrag) and what it means.
  • name the countries that form the Schengen area
  • when a passport is being checked
  • explain what Schengen means for a transfer passenger

passport check, yes or no?
  • All arriving passengers in the Netherlands need to go through immigrations (passport check).  
  • Exceptions: passengers who travel between Schengen countries. These passengers may exit without a passport check.

Schiphol
At Schiphol the B, C, D (bovenverdieping) and M pier are used only for the  Schengen flights. Passengers do not have to go through immigrations (passport check) when they depart/arrive at these piers.

Most flights within Europe depart and arrive at these piers.

Schengen treaty (verdrag):
  • 1985
  • 26 countries
  • treaty was signed in the village of Schengen (Luxemburg) 
  • free traffic of persons and goods
  • people may travel between these countries without showing their passports.
