Conditionals

Slide 1 - Slide

Conditionals = if-zinnen
A conditional sentence exists of 2 parts: 
If it rains tomorrow, I will stay at home

  • the condition (voorwaarde/actie): If it rains tomorrow
  • the result (resultaat/gevolg): I will stay at home.

There are 4 different ways to construct conditional sentences in English.

Slide 2 - Slide

Type 0 conditional (100% waar):
This form is used for: 
- facts 

How to make:  use a present simple in both parts

If water freezes, it becomes ice.

Slide 3 - Slide

 First conditional (erg waarschijnlijk, bijna 100% waar)
How to make
use a present simple in the if-clause
and will + full verb (hele ww) in the main clause.

If you are late, she will be very angry.

Slide 4 - Slide

Second conditional (onwaarschijnlijk, maar niet onmogelijk) 
The type 2 conditional:
- it is unlikely to happen, but not impossible

How to make
use a past simple in the if-clause and would + infinitive in the main clause.

If I learned to play the guitar, I would be  a rock star.
If I were famous, I would post on Instagram every day.

Third conditional (onwaar, niet meer te veranderen)
The type 3 conditional:
a time in the past and a situation that is the opposite of the present.

How to make
use a past perfect in the if-clause and would + past participle in the main clause
If you had studied harder, you would have passed the exam.
(but you didn't study hard, so you failed)
