What is the first step of the make-up process

The first part of the make up routine is skin prep

What could happen if we do not prepare the client’s skin for their make-up?

  • Dry skin can suck the moisture out of the foundation, causing it to look flaky

  • Oily skin can become shiny and the foundation can slide off the face

  • Combination skin can have a mixture of both

Concealers

Concealers

Concealers are an essential part of a make-up artists kit.

Concealers are used for the following things:

  • To cover imperfections

  • correct skin tone

  • create a flawless complexion.

There are 2 types of concealers:

  • Skin tone concealers

  • Colour correcting concealers

Skin tone and

colour correcting concealers

  • Colour correcting concealers: These come in a range of colours to neutralise specific colours found on the skin

  • Skin tone concealers: We will match this to the client's skin tone and will cover blemishes, under-eye circles and minor imperfections.

Using concealers

  • Colour correcting concealers:

  1. Choose the colour-correcting concealer required for your client's needs.

  2. Apply hygienically to the area that needs correcting.

  3. Blend out using a sponge or brush.

  4. Continue with skin tone concealer.

  • Skin tone concealers:

  1. Choose a concealer that matches the client’s skin tone

  2. Hygienically apply a small amount of concealer

  3. Blend using a sponge or suitable brush using tapping motions.

  4. Set using a translucent powder – This will prevent creasing and help the make-up last.

What are the benefits of foundation?

Foundation

  • To even out skin tone.

  • To provide a good base to apply further make-up products.

How can we adjust a foundation to make it match our client's skin?

  • Mix foundation with lighter/darker shade.

Contouring

16

What differences can you notice in the pictures below?

17

Contour

Contouring can be used to hide or enhance areas of a clients face.

This is done after you have applied your foundation. It is not done to add colour to the face, this is done with bronzing powder later in the service.

If you are using a liquid contour, it is applied BEFORE you set the face with powder. If you are using a powder contour, it is applied AFTER you have set the face.

Your contour should blend into the skin, not create a harsh line on the face

Highlighting and shading

Highlighter and shader are used to help change the appearance of a face shape.

Highlighter – Brings the area forward and draws attention to the area

Shader – Creates shadow and helps to hide the area.
