  • They were born in the same town and have known each other for a long time.

Why is the story of the woman in the red dress important?
timer
1:00

Slide 8 - Open question

Why is the story of the woman in the red dress important?
The story is important for multiple reasons:
  1. It is the reason George and Lennie had to leave Weed and caused them to end up at the ranch.
  2. Lennie’s actions tend to get him in trouble, because he does not understand what he’s doing.
  3. At the end the red dress is also compared to the puppies, showing that it is more than just animals that Lennie likes to touch.
  4. The repetition of the story could also foreshadow something similar happening in the future.

Slide 9 - Slide

Foreshadowing

timer
1:00

Slide 11 - Open question

What do we learn about Slim, and how would you
describe his personality?
We learn that he is good at reading people, calm, and can get people to confide in him.

He does not talk much himself, but he does ask questions to keep the conversation going.

                                                                                   What is his job title?

Slide 12 - Slide

Slim is a jerkline skinner
The jerkline skinner is in charge of directing the mules with a long, thin rope called a jerkline, which is attached to the animals' harnesses. This job requires a great deal of skill and experience.

timer

Slide 14 - Open question

Chapter 3 discusses different women, namely:
Curley’s wife and the prostitutes.
How do the men on the ranch view these women?

The women are either entertainment or trouble.

The men talk about the money, the whiskey and the chairs,
but not about the women that they are paying for.

What reasons are we given to think their ‘dream’ will succeed or fail?
timer
1:00

Slide 16 - Open question

What reasons are we given to think their ‘dream’
will succeed or fail?
It could succeed because
  • George already knows of a place they could buy,
  • and Candy wants to join them and has money they could use.
  • They have constructed a plan.

The other workers finding out about the plan could be a reason for it to fail.

Slide 17 - Slide

Why do you think Candy says: “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to have let no stranger shoot my dog”?
timer
1:00

Slide 18 - Open question

Why do you think Candy says: “I ought to of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t ought to have let no stranger shoot my dog”?
For example:
He feels like it was his responsibility.
The dog was his and he’d had it for a long time.
He also compares himself to the dog – he would rather get shot after getting fired than have to suffer the rest of his life alone.

What could it foreshadow?

Who says this to whom:
"I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny"

And what does it imply?
What is Crooks' reaction?

Slide 25 - Slide

"Crooks had reduced himself to nothing"
"Yes ma'am", and his voice was toneless"

Curley's wife's remark refers to lynching. Crooks is shown as the most vulnerable character on the ranch, since Curley's wife, also a weak character, can cause him to retreat so quickly.
Crooks gives up on his dream of joining Lennie and George
