Speed: Understanding How Fast Things Move

What do you already know about speed?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to explain what speed is, use the speed formula, identify standard units, and compare the speeds of different objects.

What Is Speed?

Speed describes how fast something is moving. It tells us how much distance is covered in a certain amount of time.

The Speed Formula

Speed is calculated using the formula: speed = distance f7 time. This shows the link between distance, time, and speed.

Units of Measurement

Distance

Time & Speed

Time: seconds (s), minutes (min), hours (h). Speed: metres per second (m/s).

Measured in metres (m) and kilometres (km).

Examples of Speed

Different activities have different speeds. For example, a cyclist, a car, and a sprinter all move at different speeds.

Comparing Speeds

The faster an object moves, the greater its speed. Compare animals, vehicles, or athletes to see speed differences.

Quick Challenge

If a runner covers 100m in 10 seconds, what is their speed? (Hint: Use the formula!)

Key Points to Remember

Speed is distance divided by time. Standard units help us compare speeds. Faster movement means higher speed.
