Waarden (de kern): De diepste laag; onbewuste opvattingen over wat wenselijk is (goed/slecht, normaal/abnormaal).
Symbolen: (buitenste laag): Meest oppervlakkige kenmerken, zoals jargon, kledingstijl, logo's en huisstijl.
Helden: Personen (levend of dood, echt of fictief) die in de cultuur worden bewonderd en als gedragsmodel dienen.
Rituelen: Collectieve activiteiten die belangrijk zijn voor de sfeer en sociale structuur, zoals vergaderingen, de vrijdagmiddagborrel, koningsdag, Vierdaagse, enz.

Gelaagdheid: Het model laat zien dat cultuur niet alleen uit zichtbare zaken bestaat, maar vooral uit onzichtbare waarden.
Veranderbaarheid: De buitenste lagen (symbolen) zijn relatief makkelijk te veranderen, terwijl de kern (waarden) zeer moeilijk te veranderen is.
