Auxiliary Verb?

2 ways to start a question

1) Using a question word:

Who – What – Where – Why – Which – When –  Whom – How

What is your mother’s name? When will Julie arrive at the airport? Where is my phone? Whose car is this?

2) Using an auxiliary verb (hulpwerkwoord):

Do – Be – Have

Are we happy? Do you like this very much? Has she really lost her mind?

Questions can start with main verbs like: stay, eat, sleep, put, etc

"Was she reading a book when you entered?"

"Were they a sleep when the bomb fell?"

What is a question tag?

“een kleine bijzin aan het einde van een zin die maakt dat de zin een vraag wordt.”

Examples: 

 “You are from Ethiopia, aren’t you?”

“ We won’t lose, will we?”

If the statement is positive, we use a negative question tag: 

“ Your mother has lived here her entire life, hasn’t she?”

“You work here, don’t you?”  

If the statement is negative, we use a positive question tag: 

“You don’t work here, do you?” 

“ Your mother hasn’t lived here her entire life, has she?”

He is a good teacher,

1. is he?
2. isn't he?

I’m not late again,

1. aren't I?
2. am I?

Use the same tense: (past – present – future)

to form the question tag!

If there is NOT an auxiliary verb in the statement, we use 

DO – (don’t, doesn’t or didn’t)

You were looking for me,

1. were you?
2. weren't you?
3. are you?
4. didn't you?

They have been playing all day,

1. have they?
2. haven't we?
3. didn't they?
4. haven't they?

They never talk about money,

1. talk they?
2. do they?
3. don't they?
4. have they?

She loves him,

1. hasn't she?
2. didn't she?
3. doesn't she?
4. won't she?

They would like to win,

1. won't they?
2. wouldn't we?
3. didn't they?
4. wouldn't they?

3. Create 3 statements with question tags for this interview;

Situation:  A client refuses to pay for a treatment because she is not satisfied.

Question: "How would you react if this would happen to you?"

Example Question Tag: "You don't have any further questions, do you?"
