Trade between European and African and Asian countries changed. It went from mainly trade to occupation by the Europeans. 

Why did they do this?

Cultural reasons
Countries outside the Western world were seen as less developed.

Europeans though they were saving, educating and civilizing their colonies. They saw themselves as the saviour. 
However: this is a form of racism!

Economic reasons
EU countries wanted more profit from industry. 
They needed fossil fuels and raw materials. 

These materials were turned into goods in factories in EU and then sold back to the colonies.

Political reasons

EU countries want to show how powerful they are.
A big empire means a lot of status. 

Britain was very proud of their colonial empire, it is the largest empire ever!!

Not only the British, but other EU countries also expanded. 

1885: EU countries discuss how Africa should be divided amongst them. 

New borders were drawn on a map. They split up tribes with their new borders. 

Sometimes tribes who were at war with each other were now supposed to be 1 country > tension.
