Some literary terms
1. Theme
= The idea central to a story

2. Plot
= The events that make up a story

3. Setting
= The time and place in which the story takes place

I discuss the literary terms, but first I ask for each term if they already know the meaning. Then, I go into the definition.

Read the prologue
Answer the following questions for yourself:

1. What do you know based on the Prologue?
2. What do you think is going to happen?
3. Does anything about the Prologue catch your attention?

Give the students 10 minutes to read the prologue. Once they're done, we'll discuss the questions on the slide together.
Grading
You will complete two assignments on Tuck Everlasting. Together, they  will count towards one grade for Reading:

1. 50% of grade = Assignment 1 (will be explained on last slide)
2. 50% of grade = Participation and final product in lesson 2

I explain the pupils how they will complete two assignments on Tuck Everlasting and that the assignments will be graded.

I tell the pupils that they will count towards one grade for their Reading.

Homework for next class
  1. Read the book Tuck Everlasting.
  2.  Choose one of the following assignments and turn it in for next lesson:

  • Write an article for a magazine of your choice. The title of the article is called: "I had dinner with Winnie".
  • Write an entry in the personal diary of Winnie.
  • Suppose there was an award ceremony in which five of the characters in the novel are presented with awards, which awards would they be? Explain why you would give the characters these particular awards.

I explain the assignments that they have to turn in for next lesson.

I also explain that the assignment should be at least a page long.

Lastly, I warn them that, if they didn't complete the assignment, they will not be able to participate in the next lesson and that they will have to do a full book report instead. This book report entails a summary of the story and a review on it.
