Let's have a look at the following sentences:
Mister Hulst is a happy teacher, isn't he?
and
Ariana Grande is not going on a world tour, is she?

If the sentence is positive, the tag question is negative.

He is a strict teacher, isn’t he?

If the sentence is negative, the tag question is positive.

You aren’t in my English class, are you?

With the verb to be and modal verbs such as can, you have to repeat the verb in the tag question. If the main sentence is in the present perfect (to have + past participle), you repeat to have in the tag question.
Examples:
  1. You can speak English, can’t you?

  2. You have explained this to me before, haven’t you?

With other (main) verbs, you use a form of to do in the tag question.

Examples:
  1. She volunteers at the hostel, doesn’t she?
    and
  2. He collected money for charity, didn’t he?
