Slide 9 - Slide

Relative clauses/Betrekkelijke bijzin

who - bij mensen
which - bij dieren en dingen
that - personen, dieren, dingen
that = informeler dan who/which
that gebruik je NOOIT tussen 2 komma's

Slide 10 - Slide

For example:
He is the doctor who helped my grandmother.

This is the car which was involved in an accident.

There goes the girl that looks like Alice.

Can I leave out 'who', 'which' or 'that'?

Slide 11 - Slide

When can I leave out who or which?
  • het al duidelijk is om wie of wat het gaat
  • het voornaamwoord niet op het onderwerp slaat
  • er een voornaamwoord achter staat

The flowers (which) he gave me were beautiful.
Here is the hat (that) I bought in New York.

Slide 12 - Slide

Soms geeft een bijzin alleen extra informatie.
Je gebruikt dan nooit that, maar altijd who of which.

Franklin, who is my nephew, is younger than I am.

This bank, which is quite old, is hard to break in.

Slide 13 - Slide

Je kunt who en which samen met voorzetsels gebruiken, deze staan meestal achteraan in de bijzin.

The village (which) I lived in has really changed.

The owner (who) the police had talked to, was afraid.

Slide 14 - Slide

Het voorzetsel kan ook vooraan in de bijzin staan, dat is formeler. in dit geval verandert who dan soms in whom.

The owner to whom the police had talked, was afraid.

Slide 15 - Slide

Let op!
Het woordje whose geeft bezit aan.

The man whose car was stolen was on the news.

Marvin, whose bike was stolen had to walk home.
