What is Density?

Density is a measure of how much mass is packed into a given volume. It tells us how tightly matter is packed together.

Calculating Density

Density = Mass / Volume. If you know the mass (in grams) and volume (in cm^3), you can use this formula to find density.

Units of Density

The standard unit of density is kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m^3). In laboratories, grams per cubic centimetre (g/cm^3) is common.

Density in Action

Substances with different densities behave differently. For example, oil floats on water because it is less dense.

Real-World Examples

Hot Air Balloons

Hot air is less dense than cold air, which is why hot air balloons rise.

Large ships float because their average density is less than water, even though they are heavy.
