6.2 Roots

Slide 1 - Slide

Aim:
• Students can identify the two different types of root systems that plants have
• Students can explain why plants have roots and can explain the importance of root hairs
• Students can explain the purpose, similarities and differences of xylem and phloem
• Students can compare and contrast xylem and phloem

Slide 2 - Slide

Structures of a root

Slide 3 - Slide

What do the roots do?
  • The root cap senses where there is water.
  • The primary and lateral roots anchor the plant in the ground and provide support.
  • The root hairs absorb the water and nutrients from the soil.

Slide 4 - Slide

Slide 5 - Slide

Root hairs
Take up water en minerals

Larger surface area:
->more water uptake
->better grip on the soil
-> more rigid in the ground

Slide 6 - Slide

Inside a root

Slide 7 - Slide

You only have to know this and the next slide:
xylem flows up.

phloem flows down.

Slide 8 - Slide

You only have to know this:

xylem
transports
water up

phloem transports
water with glucose and
other substances made
by the plant
