What do the roots do?

• senses where there is water.
• anchor the plant in the ground and provide support.
• The root hairs absorb the water and minerals from the soil.

Structures of a stem

xylem flows up. 

phloem flows up or down. 

What does the stem do?

• The xylem transports water and chemicals up the plant.
• The phloem transports water and chemicals down the plant.
• The stem itself supports the weight of the leaves, flowers & fruits.
