Key Scripture
Romans 6:3-4 NIV
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? [4] We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

In the New Testament repentance and baptism goes hand in hand
  • Matthew 3:8: John the Baptist said, “Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.”
  • Acts 2:38: “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit1.’”
  • Mark 16:16 - Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
  • Acts 8:36: “And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?
  • Acts 8:38: “And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him1.”

Slide 6 - Open question

What actually happens when you repent and get baptized?
According to Romans 6:3-11, when we repent and get baptized we:
  1. Identify with Christ's death: our old self, ruled by sin, is considered dead.
  2. Participate in Christ's resurrection: Just as Christ was raised from the dead, we too are raised to live a new life. This signifies our new identity in Christ.
  3. Are set free from sin: Because we have died with Christ, we are set free from sin. Sin no longer has mastery over us.
  4. Have a New Life in Christ: As we live out our identity in Christ, we are called to walk in newness of life.
