Multiply 2-digit & 3-digit Numbers!

What do you already know about multiplying large numbers?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to multiply a 2-digit number by a 3-digit number using simple steps.

Let's Get Ready!

What Does Multiply Mean?

We use big numbers when we count lots of things, like books, people, or sweets!

Why Learn Big Numbers?

Multiply means putting groups together. If you have 3 bags with 4 apples in each, you multiply 3 by 4.

What Is a 2-digit & 3-digit Number?

A 2-digit number is 10 to 99. A 3-digit number is 100 to 999. Example: 23 and 156.

Break It Down: Step 1

First, write the 2-digit number on top and the 3-digit number below it, lined up to the right, like a sum.

Let's See an Example!

Example: 23 × 156. We set it up with 23 on top and 156 below, ready to multiply.

Multiply by Ones

Start by multiplying the top number by the ones digit of the bottom number. Write the answer below.

Repeat for Tens and Hundreds

Next, multiply the top number by the tens digit, then the hundreds digit of the bottom number, each time starting at the right position.

Add Your Answers Together!

Write each new answer (called partial products) in rows. Add them up to get your final answer.

Try It Yourself!

Can you solve 42 × 218? Use the steps we learned: set it up and solve each part!

Great Job!

Well done for learning how to multiply 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Practise with new numbers at home!
