Since 1930 petrol emissions have grown rapidly. Petrol became the main source of emissions in around 1960 and in 2004it was the source of around 40% of all carbon emissions.

Emissions have increased very rapidly over the past 50 years. In 1925 emissions stood at around 1000 million metric tonnes of carbon per year; by 2004 these emissions had increased to 8000 million metric tonnes, an increase of 800%.

Carbon emissions first became noticeable in around 1840. From this point up to around 1930, coal was almost entirely responsible for carbon in the atmosphere.

During this period emissions from natural gas and cement also grew rapidly. In fact natural gas emissions in 2004 equalled around 1500 metric tonnes of carbon. This was equal to the total emissions in the world in 1940.
