New inventions.
  • Ships were build better, but sailers also used "new" navagational tools.
  • The quadrant was used to measure distance.
  •   The backstaff was used to figure out your position using the sun.

The sea route
  • Portugal was the first state that tried to find a way to Asia.
  • Henry (the Navigator) wanted to find a sea route, and not use the Silk Road. 
  • He needed a new, strong ship. The carvel was designed.

  • In 1498 a sailer from Portugal found a route to Asia.
  • After a few struggles, the Portugese started trading spices.

Columbus
  • The Portugese earned a lot of money.
  • Christopher Columbus was an Italian merchant. He had a plan to go to India, but not through the east but through the west.
  • No one wanted to give him money exept the Spaninsh King Ferdinand II of Aragon.
