Grammar labels Unit 2

  • Past Simple = verb + ed OR 2nd form
  • Past Continuous = was/were + verb + ing (continuous = emphasis of duration, always -ing in this form)

  • Present Perfect = has/have + 3rd form
  • Past Perfect = had + 3rd form

  • Used to/didn't use to

  • Adjectives (bijvoegelijke naamwoorden) -> modify nouns
  • Adverbs (bijwoorden)  -> modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, sentences
  • Comparisons -> as good as; not as nice as; taller than; more dedicated than; duller than; the brighter the better; more quickly than
  • Comparisons -> few/fewer/fewest; many/more/most (countable); little/less/least; much/more/most (non-countable)

irregular form:  2nd form (took/ate etc.); 
question/negative: did/didn't + 1st form (take/eat)

Present Perfect = 
regular form: has/have + verb + ED; 
irregular form: has/have + 3rd form; 
question/negative: hasn't/haven't + 3rd form

USE of  TENSES
Past Simple -> actions finished in the past (signal words such as yesterday, in 2001, last year etc.; > 3 actions in the past = past simple)

Present Perfect -> actions started in the past + are still going on; recent action; focus on result (when = not mentioned nor important)

Past Continuous -> longer action in the past (could be interrupted by shorter action; could be going on at the same time) or description of sth. in the past (the birds were singing happily, and we were enjoying our ice creams)

Past Perfect -> earlier action in the past (signal words: before/after)

Used to/didn't use to -> habits/repeated actions in the past
