Big Bad Grammar Test

Today:

HOW DO YOU USE THE IMPERATIVE?

Als je tegen iemand wilt zeggen dat hij/zij iets moet doen (positive), begin je de zin met het hele werkwoord, maar zonder to.
Op deze manier kun je iemand een aanwijzing, bevel of advies geven of iemand waarschuwen:
(To cross) Cross Victoria Street.
(To sit) Sit still, please.
(To be) Be quiet, please.
(To read) Read that book, please.

Als je wilt zeggen dat iemand iets NIET moet doen, zet je don't voor het hele werkwoord zonder to.

Don't cross the road now.

Don't talk during a test. 

Can/Could

Can/Can't/Could

Can = Kan, kunnen

Can't = Kan niet, kunnen niet

Could = Zou kunnen (beleefd!)

Couldn't = Zou niet kunnen (beleefd!)

Geeft aan dat iets (niet) KAN

I can walk

He can play the piano

We can jump really high

She can't be serious!

They cannot drive a car

(can't of cannot kan allebei)

Could

Als je iets voorstelt:

We could ask him

We could try that

Couldn't we ask Tim to do that?

Als iets een mogelijkheid is:

I could take a lot of pictures

I couldn't tell you

Could is ook een beleefdheidsvorm!

Should/Shouldn't 

Should/Shouldn't = Zou moeten, zou niet moeten

We gebruiken should/shouldn't + het hele werkwoord zonder 'to'  om een advies te geven.

• I should work out more often.
• You shouldn't stay up late. 

Personal Pronoun

Personal Pronoun:

• Het onderwerp van de zin
• Het lijdend of meewerkend
  voorwerp van de zin 
• Kan naam/namen vervangen

• above > boven: The clouds above your head are grey.
• under > onder: The cat hid under the couch.

• out > uit: The cat fell out the window.

Voorbeelden:

• with > met: I like fizzy drinks with ice.
• from > uit: Spongebob is from Bikini bottom.

Maar let op: 

Als het onderwerp in de zin 'you' is dan gebruik je in de short answer 'I' of 'we'. Dit is omdat het een vraag is aan jou of jullie. 

Voorbeeld:

Do you smoke? No, I don't.

Are you in love? Yes, I am.

Can we help you? No, you can't 

Do you want to leave? Yes, we do.
