Corrosion: Definition
'Corrosion  - is the physicochemical interaction between a metal and its environment, which results in changes in the metal’s properties and which may lead to significant functional impairment of the metal, the environment, or the technical system of which they form a part ( ISO 8044:2010).

At the end of the lesson you will be quizzed on this definition,

The ISO Standard for: Corrosion of metals and alloys — Vocabulary

Corrosion: The Facts
  • 4% of UK GNP (Circa £30bn)
  • Corrosion is a factor within all industries, and left unchecked corrosion has catastrophic effects on infrastructure and transport.
  • Throughout the centuries, we can observe actions taken against corrosion. For example, we know that the Romans covered copper utensils with a thin layer of tin to prevent corrosion.
