The reason the Greeks influenced the world so much is because they built colonies along the mediterranean sea (p45 book).
Each colony looked like a city in Greece. 
Hellenism refers to the Greeks spreading their influence outside of Greece.

Wars
The Greeks mostly kept to themselves and fought eachother.
However, the Persian Empire tried invading Greece twice.
Both times the Persians were defeated when the Greeks united. 
The Greeks never stayed united for long. Eventually they were conquered by the Romans.
