Air control: to change the color of the flame (more  =  more oxygen = better combustion)
Gas control: to change the height of the flame (more or less gas)

Connect the burner to the gas valve
  • The gas valve: yellow button on lab table
  • The gas hose is attached to the gas valve

  • Open the gas valve (yellow)

1a. Light a burner
  • Hold the match between thumb and index finger
  • Drag the match head along the striker on the box
  • When the match burns: keep the head higher than the rest of the match.

1b. Light the burner
  • Hold the burning match above the burner
  • Open the gas control at the same time

2. Adjust the color of the flame
  • Make a silent blue flame by opening the air control a bit
  • Make a roaring blue flame by opening the air control

3. Adjust the height of the flame
  • Make a yellow flame by closing the air control
  • Adjust the height of the flame with the gas control

4a. Check temperature of the flame
  • Make a roaring blue flame by opening the aircontrol
  • Use the tongs and hold the gauze vertical in the flame

4b. Check temperature of the flame
  • Use the tongs and hold the gauze horizontal in the flame

5. Turn off the burner
  • Close the air control
  • Close the gas control 
  • Close the main gas valve (yellow)
