What do you already know about the biggest sins in Islam?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to read, understand, and memorise the famous hadith regarding the greatest major sins, explain the meaning and lessons, and know about the narrator Abu Bakrah.

Warm-up Question

Have you ever heard someone swear by their family, or refuse to listen to their parents? Why might these actions be wrong?

Introducing the Hadith

Hadiths teach us the words and actions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which help guide Muslims in everyday life.

Our Hadith Today

Why Learn Hadith?

Today’s hadith is about the biggest sins a Muslim should avoid. We will read, understand, and remember it!

Let’s Read the Hadith

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Shall I tell you what the biggest of the major sins are?” (He asked this three times). We said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “Associating partners with Allah, disobeying parents...” Then he sat up and said: “Beware of false speech.” He kept repeating it until we wished he would stop. (Agreed upon)

Reading Practice

Read the hadith aloud with proper pronunciation. Take turns reading with your classmates.

Who Was Abu Bakrah?

Abu Bakrah’s real name was Nufay’ ibn al-Harith al-Thaqafi. He earned the nickname because he lowered himself with a rope and bucket during a siege.

Abu Bakrah’s Islam

Abu Bakrah became a Muslim during the siege of Ta’if. He was known for standing up for what is right and preventing what is wrong.

The Meaning of Major Sins

Major sins (Al-Kaba’ir) are the worst actions a Muslim must avoid, as they hurt our faith and our world.

The Three Greatest Major Sins

2. Disobeying Parents

1. Shirk

Shirk means to associate partners with Allah. This destroys faith.

Respect for parents is one of the biggest duties in Islam. Disobeying them is a major sin.

3. False Testimony

Saying something untrue against someone, especially in court or to get someone in trouble, is very harmful. The Prophet warned us many times about this.

What is Testimony?

Testimony means telling the truth when asked, especially in serious matters. Islam teaches us always to be honest.

Respecting Parents

Islam asks us to be kind and respectful to our parents. We should listen and help them.

Tell the Truth in Everyday Life

Don’t lie about your friends or classmates, even as a joke. Telling the truth is what good Muslims do.

Discussion: Think About These Actions

It’s wrong to swear by anyone except Allah. Always use truthful, respectful speech.

Refusing to Listen to Mum

Not listening to parents is against Islam. Always try your best to obey and respect them.

Swearing by Your Father

Honest Behaviour at School

If you see someone cheating, don’t lie for them. Always tell the truth, even if it is hard.

Lessons from the Hadith

1. Only worship Allah 2. Respect and obey your parents 3. Never give false testimony or lie 4. Be truthful in everything you do

Memorising the Hadith

Practise reading the hadith every day this week. Try to learn it by heart with a friend.

Reflection: Which Lesson Matters Most?

Which of the three greatest sins do you think is most important to avoid? Why? Discuss with your class.
