The start of socialism
Inequality between rich and poor was God's plan.

Robert Owen did not agree with this:
- He pays his workers a higher wage
- Limit of 8 hours work a day
- Builds good houses
- Children could go to school

The start of socialism
Robert Owen is one of the founders of socialism.

Socialists believe the government must make sure that people are more equal and protect the weak and poor.

There should be laws that protect labourers and give them rights.

The start of socialism
Labourers could unite to protest against factory owners.
They started trade unions (vakbonden).

They could strike and demand more rights.

Factory owners would fire workers who went to strikes and protests, they also used violence.

The start of socialism
Some politicians began to notice the situation of the workers.

They went to check the conditions in the factories.

There was a need for social laws that protected workers.
