Estimating Area: Making Sensible Guesses

What do you already know about measuring area?

Why Estimate First?

Estimating before measuring helps us think ahead. It also helps us become better at judging size and area with less effort.

Why Estimate Area?

Estimating helps us make sensible guesses about how much space a shape takes up before we measure. It's a skill used in everyday life and saves time.

Uniform Units: What Are They?

Uniform units are objects of the same size, like square tiles, that we use to measure area fairly.

Using the same size unit helps everyone get the same answer when measuring the same shape.

Why Use Them?

Let's Practise Together

Look at a shape and guess how many tiles you’ll need to cover it. Then place the grid and count. Was your estimate close?
