What Is Subtraction?

Subtraction means taking away from a group or number.

Subtraction Symbols

'−' is the minus sign. '=' shows the answer.

Why Do We Use Subtraction?

We use subtraction when we want to find out how many are left after taking some away.

Counting Back Method

You can count backwards to subtract. Try 7−2: count back two from seven.

Using Objects

Take real objects, like blocks, to see how subtraction works.

Start at the first number and jump backwards for each unit you subtract.
