> Make a wordweb around the picture. Write down all the words you can think of. Come up with as many words as you can.

Phrasal verbs

Slide 11 - Slide

Phrasal verbs
A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a particle, for example a  preposition(voorzetsel) or adverb (bijwoord).
The phrasal verb has a different meaning than the verb.

A phrasal verb is a verb that consists of  2 or 3 words
It can be separable or inseparable.

Example: hold on, turn off, grow up, run out of, look up to, etc.

Slide 12 - Slide

Separable phrasal verbs
If a phrasal verb is separable, it means you can separate the two words and put the object in the middle.
With separable phrasal verbs, the object can come before or after the particle

Can you please turn off the lights?
Can you please turn the lights off?

Slide 13 - Slide

Separable phrasal verbs
When the object is a pronoun (her/it/them, etc.) it can only come before the particle

We must work it out
We must work out it

Slide 14 - Slide

Separable phrasal verbs
You need to write down the information
You need to write the information down

Now we replace ´the information´ for the pronoun ´it´
You need to write it down
You need to write down it

Slide 15 - Slide

Inseparable phrasal verbs
You can´t separate the two parts of a phrasal verb, they always remain together.

The object  always comes after the particle, even when it´s a pronoun
She looks after her dad
She looks after him

Slide 16 - Slide

Inseparable phrasal verbs
Three-part phrasal verbs (look up to, look down on, etc)
are always inseparable

We won't run out of energy
We won't run out of it
