Activity - Library Session
This is much more than simply watching the video.
You needed to put  research skills into practice and explore all databases to find articles to support your videos.
YOU WERE ADVISED TO WATCH ALL VIDEOS BEFORE DECIDING WHICH TO FOCUS ON.

Slide 29 - Slide

Key word search
When you watched the clip- based on 3/4 of the key words related to your chosen video clip, you were required to:
  1. Find an article from a relevant database (remember your library session)
  2. The article should be able to provide some research /knowledge in helping a social worker to better understand the experience and needs of a similar service user.

Slide 30 - Slide

Activity - Library session
The journal article should be relevant to either mental health and carers, or safeguarding vulnerable adults
The video links provided demonstrated these areas including:
  •  Mental health
  • Service user & carer issues
  • Vulnerable older people

Slide 31 - Slide

Article search
You should have your downloaded article printed and read.
You will now be put into categorised groups where you will:
  1. Summarise 3 key points from your journal article to your fellow group members- which you see as most relevant to the issues in the video clip.
  2. Identify what the research method was.
  3. Discuss the process of searching for your article how you see this applying to your future social work practice.

Slide 32 - Slide

Groups

Get into a group corresponding to your journal article e.g:
Group 1- Mental health
Group 2-Service user & carer issues
Group 3-Vulnerable older people

  • Include name of the student who is delivering on each slide –
  • Use the notes section for detailed explanation of the slide content.
  • Referencing – you are expected to Include references on each slide and within the notes section, with a slide at the end detailing a full reference list for the presentation. Referencing should conform to UU Harvard Guidance.
  •  Required to submit a video of your presentation along with the PowerPoint &  UU cover sheet (one for the whole group).

Slide 43 - Slide

Tips for an effective presentation
  • Divide work up fairly and work jointly on the different sections, make this clear in your presentation.
  • This helps to ensure that sections connect with each other and improves the flow of the presentation.

Slide 44 - Slide

Tips for an effective presentation (cont)
  • Consider group contract/ plan to decide roles, schedules, and sharing of resources/ workload. Use this as a test of your ability to work as a team and the challenges this brings.
  • Be wary of duplication – time is limited so although presentations should flow from one person to the next, make sure you do not repeat what another team member has said.

Slide 45 - Slide

Tips
  • A plan/structure should be included at the outset, detailing how you intend to proceed.
  • Develop in your ability to be concise & have a clear focus on the task.
  • Commentary is strongest when well supported by ref to an explicit knowledge base, & weaker, when more generalised/ unsupported;.
  • Integration of good critical commentary on the contribution of Sociology is required e.g.  functionalism and conflict theory, impact of stigma/shame/labelling on individuals and families.
  • Section on social policy should engage with welfare, to include supporting acad texts & should address the impact of neoliberal ideology on welfare.

I, Daniel Blake
In pairs consider your personal thoughts and feelings about poverty.

Lets create a class mind map to summarise your feelings from watching the film.

Slide 56 - Slide

Defining poverty
The Poverty and Social Exclusion UK research project defines poverty as ‘those whose lack of resources forces them to live below a publicly agreed minimum standard’ (see http://www.poverty.ac.uk/definitions-poverty)
Definition is important because it determines actions to address poverty.
