Texts

What do all texts have in common?
(do not write down : words/letters etc. )

What types of text are there?
(e.g. newspaper article)

What types of texts could you expect at your reading test?

1. all kinds
2. only newspaper articles
3. only magazine articles
4. newspaper articles, magazine articles and reviews

Texts:

 

1. short texts

- texts with 1 – 3 questions

- read/scan the text quickly

- read the questions and find the answers in the text

2. longer texts:

- texts with 6 – 9 questions

- necessary to fully understand the text (ELZA: eerste en laatste zin lezen van elke alinea)

- intensive reading necessary

3. texts to scan:

- texts directed for specific information (e.g. tv-programme, name,      year, etc.)

- first read he question

4. gap-texts

- the words left out are redundant (not necessary to understand         the text)

- information needed is found in the sentences around the gap

- the connective words (signaalwoorden) from the SSL list are often useful

How to tackle a text.

 

one-minute-scan:

- What is the text about and determine the text-type:

- title: Do I know what it means?

- subtitle?

- pictures, lay-out

- type of text?

- What do I already know about the topic of the text?

Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph (ELZA)

Look for connective words and circle them: but, whereas, due to, while, and, on the contrary, moreover, etc.

Wat voor soort vragen zijn er?

Vragen

1. beoordelingsvragen

- vraagt naar de functie of toon van de tekst of een gedeelte van de tekst

e.g. What is the tone of this article? What is the author’s opnion?

e.g. ironic, sarcastic, understatement, etc.

2. conclusievraag

- vraagt naar een conclusie in de tekst: vraagt niet naar jouw conclusie/mening

3. formuleringsvraag

- vraagt naar een betekenis

  e.g. What does this mean? What is this piece piece of text about?

4. functievraag

- vraagt naar verband tussen verschillende tekstgedeelten

- vraagt naar de structuur van de tekst

   e.g. What is the use of paragraph 4 in connection with paragraph 5?

5. hoofdgedachtevraag

- vraagt naar de kern/hoofdgedachte van een tekst

   e.g. Why did the author write this text? What is the purpose of this text?

   Concentreer je op de kernzinnen!

6. invulvraag (in a gap tekst)

- lees de zin voor en de zin na de gap zorgvuldig, lees de mogelijke antwoorden nog niet

- kijk welk woord je in zou kunnen vullen

- lees nu pas de opties en kijk of jouw antwoord er tussen staat

- vertaal of zoek de woorden op van de mogelijke antwoorden die je niet kent

7. mc-vraag

- scan eerst de gehele tekst

- lees de mc-vraag en kijk in de tekst waar het antwoord staat, welke alinea/deel van     de tekst

- lees dat stuk tekst zorgvuldig

- lees de mc-vraag nauwkeurig en zoek de woorden op die je niet kent

- onderstreep de delen in de tekst die je nodig hebt

- kijk welke antwoorden sowieso fout zijn

- kies het juiste antwoord

8. open vraag

- wordt in het Nederlands gesteld en dus ook in het Nederlands beantwoord

- gebruik geen Engelse woorden, gebruik de Nederlandse vertalingen
