  • I left for a beach town with my best friend on 21 August 2019.
  • I travelled to the countryside with my parents on 13 July 2020.
  • I booked a room in a youth hostel on 3 June.
What do you notice?
Dates in English are pronounced differently from how they're spelled.             

21 Agust 2019 is pronounced: 
the twentyfirst of August twenty-nineteen.

13 July 2020: 
the thirteenth of July twenty-twenty

3 June:
the third of June

Pronunciation

  • Past tense =  `-ed'.
  • This `-ed' ending can be pronounced in different ways. 
  • If the verb ends with a voiceless consonant (p, k, f, ss, th, sh), the ending sounds as a /t/.
  • When you pronounce a voiceless consonant, you do not use your vocal cords.

  • If the verb ends with a voiced consonant (l, n, r, g)
  • the ending sounds as a /d/. 
  • When you pronounce a voiced consonant, you do use your vocal cords
  • The `e' is silent!
