Je gebruikt hulpwerkwoorden om aan te geven dat je iets kan doen, mag doen, wil doen, enzovoorts.

- Can you walk to school?                    - I might come to your party.
- You shouldn't walk to school.          - I must clean this up.
- I will walk to school.                             - You have to be on time.

Hulpwerkwoorden veranderen niet.
Hulpwerkwoorden hebben een ander werkwoord nodig.

- Can you walk to school?                    - I might come to your party.

Can = kunnen
Could = zou kunnen (en beleefde vragen)
"I can't come to your party" & "Could you help me out?"

May = mogen 
"You may come to my party."
