Phrasal Verbs
  • two or more parts
  • one is always a verb,  the other can be a preposition or an adverb or a combination of them all
  • Examples: to come across,  to put up with
  • the combination has a meaning of its own  (could be more than one)
  • Mostly informal use (spoken English)

to turn up = opdraaien, aankomen. 
to turn up at the party unanounced
to turn up the volume
