Reaction of the church.
The pope was angry and wrote Martin an angry letter.
Martin burned the letter and continued criticising the church.
Martin became a
heretic,
and was no longer welcome in the church.
But his life was in danger too. Killing a
heretic
was not a crime but a great deed.

Reformation
Many people agreed with Luther.
They split from the catholic church and were called Lutherans.
This is how the
reformation
started.
It also marked the beginning of violence against the catholics.
Luther himself wanted to change peacefully.

Consequences
The reformation also had consequences of government.
The German states did not listen to their emperor Charles V.
Charles V wanted a catholic state. The German leaders wanted to choose for themselfs.
He even wanted to fight over it, but his army was too weak.
Charles V was forced to sign the
Treaty of Ausburg.

Consequences for the Low Countries.
What we now call the Netherlands and Belgium were called the Low Countries.
Our King was the King of Spain Charles V.
In 1555 he was succeded by his son Philip II.

The Low Countries were 17 provinces, they were called

States General.
The king wanted to have more power.

He appointed a
governor
who ruled in his name.

was his niece the Duchess of Parma.
