Departure and Arrival
The Vikings were warriors that came from mostly Norway in search of gold and treasure. Norway was a long way from Ireland. They would attack monasteries, but they also settled in places like Dubh Linn (Dublin) Ireland. They built a large wooden wall around their houses to keep the Irish out.

Viking shipbuilding
The word ‘Viking’ means ‘sea pirate’. The Vikings were great ship builders. They built longships that were light and easy to sail. Longships were great for a quick getaway after a raid. It took a few weeks to sail from to Dubh Linn. A longship could carry up to 60 men. There was no shelter so they put up on the boat to shield them from the rain on long journeys

Crafts and Trade
The Vikings that came to live in Dubh Linn had many different skills and jobs. Among them were busy merchants and craftspeople who made tools and goods out of leather, metal and wood. Dubh Linn grew into a busy trading port. The Irish were not happy that the Vikings settled in Dubh Linn but after a while they learned to live together. Some Vikings even married Irish women.

Viking warriors
Viking boys were taught how to fight from a young age. They learned how to fight with spears, axes and swords. They gave their swords names like ‘Leg-biter’ or ‘Skull-splitter’. Vikings were taught to be fearless. To die in battle was a great honour. Warriors were buried with their weapons.

A letter to read

Dearest father and mother,
“I am writing this letter with my feet back on dry land. They call this vast, green land across the ocean “black pool”. When I sadly departed from you, Arne and Bjorn, there was much sorrow: we cried and cried. I had to leave you behind because I had to grow up, becoming another brave Viking traveling across the sea to the longphort of Dubh Linn. After we arrived I thankfully found a good place to live. Now we go out into the wilderness, trying to seek treasures of all kinds and I help building trade routes.

I want to reassure you, dearest father and mother, that I am doing well, even though I feel lonely at times. I do long for you all every single day. You have been wonderful parents, I truly wish that we will be reunited someday.

Until than I will remember you always and ask the Gods to keep you safe.
Until we meet again,

Ragnar
