Obligatory = verplicht
Allowed = toegestaan
Similar = lijken op elkaar
Formal = Formeel
Informal = Informeel

Verbs for rules: Must, have to, can
Must/have to: to say that something is obligatory
You have to train hard to do a marathon.
Runners must arrive twenty minutes before the race.

Can: to say that something is allowed
Members can use the swimming pool for free.

Don't have to: to say that something is not obligatory but allowed
You don't have to be fit to join the club.

can't, mustn't: to say that something is not allowed
You can't touch the ball in football.
You mustn't leave any bags in this area.

Must and have to = similar        -         Can't and mustn't = similar
Spoken English: have to and can't (informal)
Written English: must and mustn't (formal)

Mustn't = Don't do it!
Don't have to = It's not neccessary to do it

  • Must/mustn't and Can/can't:  never change form with I/you/he she it/ they etc.: they always stay the same. 
  • Put it before the main verb >
  • Don't use do, does or did to make a question >

  • Have to: works like a normal verb:
