Division in the Netherlands

The rebels were called “Geuzen” (beggars)
The rebels later used the word Geus as a title of honor
Calvinists who had fled formed a fleet (the Sea Beggars)
They recognized William of Orange as their leader

1572: Battle of Brielle

In the months after, many cities in Zeeland and Holland opened their gates to the Geuzen

The city leaders joined the Revolt and recognized William of Orange as their leader

From the south, Alva’s armies advanced
Battle of Naarden (bloodbath)
This terror caused other cities to refuse to surrender at all
Alkmaar, Leiden, and Haarlem were besieged but held out for months

In Leiden and Alkmaar, the Geuzen won
Philip’s money ran out
He could no longer pay his soldiers
Because of this, the Geuzen were able to gain more territory

In 1580, Philip promised a high reward for anyone who would kill William of Orange
Outlawed
Fled to Delft
In response, the Union of Utrecht officially deposed Philip as ruler
This was the beginning of Dutch independence

In 1584, William of Orange was assassinated by Balthasar Gérard

A year later, the Spanish captured Antwerp (the largest and richest city of the Netherlands)

In the north, the rebels held their ground
1581: Act of Abjuration
In 1588, they founded the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands

They appointed William’s son as stadtholder (Maurice of Orange)
From now on, stadtholder was the title for the military leader of the Republic
The war between the Republic and Spain continued for a long time
In 1648, they made peace (Peace of Münster)

Three southern provinces joined the Spanish side

They stayed catholic

After that, the rebellious provinces also formed a union (the rebels)
