Lesson Goal
At the end of this class you can:
- recognise the passive 
- understand the use of the passive 
- make active sentences passive and vice versa 
- construct a passive sentence using the sentence's indirect object as well
- correctly translate Dutch sentences with 'er' into English

The test
1. Fill in the scheme with the correct passive tenses (9)
2. Fill in the correct form of the passive (mind the tenses!) (10)
3. Put 10 sentences in the passive (again, mind the tenses)
4. Translate 5 Dutch 'er'- sentences into English
5. Write a story in English with the phrases and words given. Use the passive at least 5 times!

Passive sentences in 5 steps
  1. Identify the subject, verb and object (both direct and indirect)
  2. Identify the tense by looking at the verb
  3. Use object as new subject (singular/ plural)
  4. Add form of 'to be' and change verb into past participle (voltooid deelwoord, 3e uit rijtje onregelmatige ww.)
  5. Add rest of the sentence and agent if needed

Passive sentences in 5 steps
  1. Zoek onderwerp, lijd. voorwerp, meew. voorwerp en ww. gezegde
  2. In welke tijd staat het gezegde?
  3. Maak van lijd./meew. voorwerp het onderwerp
  4. Voeg een vorm van 'to be' toe en een voltooid deelwoord, 3e uit rijtje onregelmatige ww.
  5. Zet de rest van de zin erbij, evt. met by ....

'Er' constructions
'Er' can be translated as 'there' only when the main verb in the sentence is a form of 'to be'!!!

There were five boys and three girls attending primary school on the remote Scottish island. 
There were  three calls from the mainland this morning.
