Moral impacts of different technologies
People can have ranging opinions of new technologies and how they will impact people's day to day lives. 

One example is driverless cars and how they can impact the driver, passenger or people on the street.

Driverless cars are becoming more and more common in major cities across the US.

Plans have been created to introduce driverless taxi's in London as soon as next year.

Artificial intelligence applied (AI)
The Moral Machine is an international research project by the MIT Media Lab that collects data from people to understand how our collective ethics could inform the AI of driverless cars.

  • Specifically, they want to learn how to make machines moral.

You will be presented with 13 driverless cars scenarios to judge and will discover at the end how your judgements relate to the other people who have taken part internationally.

While student try out the different scenarios, it would be advisable to circulate and engage in conversations about their decision-making. If any learners finish early, they could create their own challenging scenario.

Moral machine
Each of the Moral Machine scenarios is based on the premise that the brakes fail on a driverless car. 

  • You have to make a moral decision about whether the car should be programmed to continue on a course and cause death to the individuals in the path of the car, or divert to cause death either to the individuals in the car or individuals in another location.
