Chapter 7: Natural disasters in Japan

Slide 1 - Slide

Slide 2 - Video

What types of natural disasters do you know?

Slide 3 - Open question

What do you want to know about natural disasters?

Slide 4 - Open question

Task
-Do the exercises of the 'start' in your workbook.

-From now on we will work with the geoguide. If possible take it with you OR leave it in your locker and take it during class.

-Have a look in the online environment of the geo. GO to magister and 'leermiddelen'

Lesson 1:
At the end of the lesson you are able to:
1. Explain what the ring of fire is

2.Draw the several directions of plate movement.

Languageaim: Explain what the words: prosperous, eruption, (shape of an) arc and jerky mean.

Slide 7 - Slide

Forces that change the earth

Exogenic force=
From the outside
Endogenic force=
from the inside

Slide 8 - Slide

Japan in the ring of fire

Slide 9 - Slide

Exogenic
Two exogenic forces:

  1. Weathering
  2. Erosion

Slide 10 - Slide

Endogenic force: Plate tectonics

Slide 11 - Slide

Note!!!

Endo
genic force: forces from the inside: earthquakes, volcano's.

Exogenic forcen: force from the outside: weathering, erosion.

Convection current

Slide 13 - Slide

Note!
Convection current

=  the flow of molten rock under the earths crust.

Slide 14 - Slide

Types of plates
Oceanic plate:
- Very heavy!

Continental plate:
- Lighter than oceanic plate.

Slide 15 - Slide

Subduction
The heavy oceanic plate is
 forced under the continental
plate.

The oceanic plate melts >
 becomes magma

Magma rises to the surface and creates a volcano.

Slide 16 - Slide

Plate boundaries

Slide 17 - Slide

Convergent plate boundary
Because of this movement mountain chains will eventually develop in the regions next to the convergent boundary.

The Alps are an example of such a mountain chain.

Slide 18 - Slide

Divergent plate boundary
Two tectonic plates which move apart.

Oceanic ridge
Underwater mountains formed by a divergent plate boundary.

Slide 19 - Slide

Transform plate boundary

Where 2 tectonic plates slide alongside each other .

Earthquakes are common

Slide 20 - Slide

Draw the directions of plate movement
1.Convergent

2.Divergent

3.Transform

Fill in the blanks: Apply the words Prosperous, Jerky, Eruption ,Arc, Volcano
Japan is a ...1......country in East Asia. It is part of the ring of fire
The ring of fire is an....2.....shaped ring around the pacific plate. Along the plate boundaries you can find multiple......3.....
They ......4.....when magma rises in the subductionzone.

Plates collide not always very smooth, normally they have ....5.....movements and earthquakes are created.

19-11 What are we going to do today?
  • First of all: i cannot talk properly. So...no long speeches from me today.
  • Secondly: lets start were we stopped last time. Take out your laptop and join the lessonup to answer some questions.
  • Than we will see a film in dutch and i will hand you an assignment.
