International conflicts (internationale conflicten): A conflict between two or more nations
Internal conflicts, or civil wars (interne conflicten, burgeroorlog): A conflict between population groups within a country
Armed conflict (gewapend conflict): a continuous battle in which at least 25 people die in a year
Ethnicity (etniciteit): The identity of people based on culture and background
People (volk): A group of people who feel connected, because of a common language, religion, or history
Nation (natie): A people who live in an independant state, or would like to form one
State (staat): area with an internationally recognized border
Sovereignty (soevereiniteit): In a state there are laws and rules. These are enforced by the state itself, and other countries are not allowed to interfere with that
Self-determination ( zelfbeschikking): another word for sovereignty
separatism (separatisme): A people that wants to separate itself from a nation
Annexation (annexatie): occupying an area in the territory of another state
